For the 2007 competition, KC Emerging Green Builders teamed with Habitat for Humanity Kansas City, Inc., providing an "example" site at 1601 E. 33rd Street (Linwood Annex Lot 7) in Kansas City, Missouri.
The challenge for participants was to design a Habitat for Humanity prototype house that is sustainable, repeatable and affordable. Evaluation criteria included:
- Conceptual design and program fulfillment: how the project's vision meets the requirements (program components are provided to each team)
- Integration of green design strategies and applicability to LEED criteria
- Creativity in process, design, and innovation
- Engagement of environmental, economic, and social aspects of program and site
- Overall energy reduction and its documentation
On Saturday, June 9th, Matt Peddie was named the winner of the first annual KC-EGB Natural Talent design competition.
The first place prize: $1000 plus all-expenses paid to the 2007 Greenbuild Conference and Expo in Chicago. Matt will have until October to refine his design in preparation for the national-level Natural Talent competition, which is made up of 19 local competitions judged on uniform criteria.
Jake Johannes was awarded second place in this year's competition, and Neil Steiner was awarded third. All three winners have been given the opportunity to adjust and resubmit their entrees into a design competition being held by the new Emerging Green Builders group in Columbia Missouri. This competition will be focused on creating sustainable alternatives to home-building for residents of Greensburg, Kansas, as the town begins the long road to rebuilding.
