Historic Green sprung forth from USGBC Kansas City as several active members of the chapter became involved in the rebuilding of the Holy Cross neighborhood in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans immediately after Hurricane Katrina in 2006.

Bob Berkebile, BNIM Architects, and one of the names synonymous with sustainable design, brought Dave McCaulay, Ryan Evans, Curt Rohner and Jeremy Knoll into initial conversations with Holy Cross neighborhood leaders who were passionate about preserving the historic integrity of the homes built by their parents and grandparents; homes that were, at the time, covered in silt and debris.  The challenge of blending the human element, physical history and culture with best practices in sustainable design became a strategic driver for continued and expanded progress.

Historic Green has itself blossomed into a thriving nonprofit 501c3 organization, galvanizing hundreds of volunteers and hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial and in-kind contributions to rebuild Holy Cross, NOLA.  Strategically, the organization stands ready to work with distressed communities nationwide.

Mission
Historic Green guides collaboration with people and organizations to sustainably restore distressed communities.  We restore physical places in communities where there is momentum to preserve their identity.  Historic Green serves to transform and revitalize communities through education and charitable activities that integrate sustainable design and heritage conservation practices. www.historicgreen.org .
